Hi John. setting up a new battery after filling requires a good 8 hours on a
charger,
which should not be capable of more than 1/10 the amp-hour rating of the battery.
Hmm, '69? That's one of those big muthas, isn't it?
Anyway, anything up to 2A should be fine. 24 hours with your half amp will do as
well.
A wet battery will gas while charging regardless if it's dead or charged. It's
just what
happens when you put electrical current through water.
The -only- way to tell a batteries state of charge is with a hydrometer.
A small one for mc batteries cost's about $10. (not the floating ball type, look
for the
glass float with steel shot for a weight) Hydrometer readings will tell you when
your
battery is on it's way out too, well before it leaves you stranded.
