I replaced mine at 10K miles, just because I'm anal, and I was there

The chains do wear into them a bit, they take a lot more abuse from heat.
I admit, my motor did get -really- hot a few times, and it showed when I
tore it down.
I'll chalk it up to my own abuse, and now I tend to avoid heavy traffic and
excessive
heat buildup.
