The problem here is that franchised dealers can't afford to keep experienced
technicians, they break them in and when the tech realizes he can make a lot
more independently, they go do it.
That leaves the majority of dealer techs that weren't around bikes when they
were anything but 5 speed evo's or newer. I'm no exception.
Besides the lack of experience, there is possibly a lack of tools and lack of
parts,
both of which end up either just breaking even or losing money on the job.
My shop will take in just about anything, since the franchise was started in
the late
teens, and we have tools and NOS parts from waaaay the hell back, we accept
the fact that we don't make money on it, since many of our old iron customers
come
back and buy newer bikes from us when they figure out that maintaining old
iron is
damn expensive when you have a dealer do it for you.
