I've helped several of my customers build their own bikes from scratch.
Things to avoid: buying a new motor with a one year warranty that starts
the day you buy it.
Get a warranty that starts the day you first fire it up.
E.G., I purchase S&S motor kits disassembled, much cheaper that way, plus
you can
paint/polish/powdercoat however you wish before assembly, and if you have a
shop
build it for you (like mine) you should get a 12 mo, 12K mile warranty
starting the day
the shop fires it for the first time.
The biggest availability of parts is for softails. I would suggest a 5
speed evo wet clutch setup.
Use as many OEM harley parts as you can, especially in the driveline, where
they need to hold
in fluids and fit properly, and don't skimp on any brake parts.
Learn about chassis alignment before cramming a huge wide tire in the back.
Assemble the entire bike and drive it a while before doing any paint work.
Just leave it primer until you know it doesn't need more cutting and
welding, and it goes
straight down the road.
