The splashing was likely from the fuel tank.
It's very likely that what you're seeing is water that smells like gasoline.
Blow by gases condensing in the breather system comes out of the breather as
water, and hangs out in the air cleaner. If this is a major problem for
you, consider
re-routing the breather to the underside of the bike with a filter on the
end.
Another possibility is that you're getting a reversion cloud of fuel (normal
on hard throttle)
that is washing some of the filter oil out of the element.
