It's called 'torque to yield' installation, it's been used for a very long
time on engines
with very long head bolts, like diesels and such.
The bolts act more like tension springs when they are that long, and it's
generally
accepted that a torque wrench will not give an accurate measure of the
'spring tension' holding
the head and cylinder down.
Side note, I made a stud installer, took a short spare head bolt, drilled a
5/16 hole straight through,
then drilled a 3/8 hole from the top to the top of the threads, dropped in a
3/8 ball bearing,
then installed a pipe plug to keep it in. Very nice.
