The new nubbly style rings only work when the derby is perfectly flat.
If it's warped like 90% of them out there, it's can't seal.
The theory is that the smooth one exerts too much force on the cover and warps it.
So, getting the smooth ring is a temporary fix, IMO, a permanent fix is a new flat
cover
and the nubbly ring, and never go back to the smooth one, and the derby cover will
last eternally.
